What is CIMA? A plain guide to the qualification: what management accountants do, the 16 exams, ACMA and CGMA, and the ways in.

Short answer

CIMA is the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, a UK professional body founded in 1919. It trains people for finance roles inside businesses. You pass up to 16 exams, add 3 years of verified work experience, and earn two titles: ACMA and CGMA. Your start point depends on what you have already studied.

What does a management accountant do?

A management accountant works inside a company and helps it plan and decide. CIMA names the kinds of roles it prepares you for:

  • Corporate finance: how the business raises and uses its money.
  • FP&A (financial planning and analysis): building budgets and forecasts, then checking results against the plan.
  • Business partnering: working next to managers and helping them make decisions with the numbers.
  • The CFO track: the path towards leading a company's finance team.

CIMA is also clear about what it is not. It gives no statutory audit or signing rights in India. If you want audit, tax or your own practice, CIMA points you to chartered accountancy (CA). If you want corporate finance, FP&A or the CFO track, it points you to CIMA. It also notes that many professionals do both.

What are CIMA and CGMA?

Since 2017 CIMA has worked jointly with the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA). Together they are called AICPA & CIMA, or "the Association". They count 597,000 members, candidates and registrants in 188 countries and territories.

When you finish, you get two titles at once. Later you can become a Fellow.

Title What it stands for When you get it
ACMA Associate member of CIMA After the Strategic level plus 3 years' work experience
CGMA Chartered Global Management Accountant At the same time as ACMA
FCMA Fellow of CIMA After 10 years of membership, or by application

What are the 16 CIMA exams?

The exams sit in four stages. The first stage is optional and meant for beginners. Each later level has three objective tests and one case study, and gives you an award when you finish it.

Stage Exams Award
Certificate in Business Accounting (optional, for beginners) BA1, BA2, BA3, BA4 CIMA Cert BA
Operational level E1, P1, F1 + Operational Case Study (OCS) CIMA Diploma in Management Accounting
Management level E2, P2, F2 + Management Case Study (MCS) CIMA Advanced Diploma in Management Accounting
Strategic level E3, P3, F3 + Strategic Case Study (SCS) ACMA + CGMA, once you also have 3 years' work experience

That is 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 = 16 exams. The Strategic Case Study is never exempt, so everyone sits it.

The syllabus was updated in 2026 to add sustainability and AI. The exam names and structure did not change. A further update for IFRS 18 comes in January 2027 for the tests and May 2027 for the case studies.

What is the difference between objective tests and case studies?

Objective tests Case studies
Length 90 minutes 3 hours
When Any day you choose Four times a year: Feb, May, Aug and Nov, over three days (Wednesday to Friday)
Where A Pearson VUE centre, or online at home A Pearson VUE centre, or online at home
Booking In MyCIMA, through Pearson VUE In MyCIMA, through Pearson VUE
Pass mark 100 out of 150 80 out of 150

Objective tests check what you know, one subject at a time. Case studies ask you to use all three subjects of a level together on one business scenario. In May 2026 the pass rates were 66% for the OCS, 62% for the MCS and 64% for the SCS.

Do you need work experience?

Yes. To become ACMA and CGMA you need 3 years of verified work experience (CIMA calls this PER). Applying for it costs £199. You need this as well as passing the Strategic level.

How long does CIMA take?

It depends on two things: where you start and how fast you study. Someone starting at BA1 has 16 exams to pass. Someone with a relevant degree or qualification may skip several, and some qualified accountants sit only the SCS.

Pace matters too. You can book objective tests any day, so you move on as soon as you are ready. Case studies run only four times a year, so they set the rhythm of each level.

How do you get into CIMA?

There is no minimum education to register. There are a few ways in.

Standard route with exemptions. Register, upload your documents, and CIMA tells you which exams you can skip. Exemptions are free. You can check your likely start point first in CIMA's free exemption calculator.

For example, a CA member of ICAI is likely to start at the Management level with 8 exams left.

CGMA Finance Leadership Program (FLP). For graduates and postgraduates with under 6 years' experience. You sit 1, 2 or 3 case studies, depending on your background.

India note: the CIMA India pathways

In India, CIMA India runs these pathways. You apply through CIMA India with a form and documents, not through the standard online route.

  • GPAP: for active ICAI (CA) or ICMAI (CMA) members. You sit 1 exam, the SCS.
  • A-Star Programme: for commerce graduates with a CGPA of 7.5 or more, degree finished in the last 5 years. 1 exam.
  • FLP: for graduates and postgraduates with under 6 years' experience. 1, 2 or 3 case studies.
  • Senior Executive Programme (SEP): for people with 6+ years' experience, at least 3 in a management or senior role. 2 exams: MCS and SCS.
  • C-Suite / CFO Programme: for senior finance leaders with 12+ years. 1 exam, the SCS.

CIMA's India page says CIMA is recognised by MNCs, Indian corporates and Global Capability Centres (GCCs). It names Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Mumbai, Delhi NCR and Chennai as hiring hubs.

What is the October 2026 registration offer?

Registration costs £99 once and includes your first year's subscription. Normally you then pay £150 a year.

If you register in October 2026, you pay no subscription until January 2028. CIMA describes this as "15 months for the price of 12". You pay only the £99 registration. Register in November and you get 14 months; in December, 13 months. The offer runs until 31 December 2026, per CIMA's site; check CIMA's terms before you rely on it.
